QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER
Choosing the right wedding photographer is a big decision and it can be difficult to navigate the seemingly endless number of photographers now available. I know that many of my clients have done their research and come prepared with questions they’ve found online, but it’s important to find a photographer you feel comfortable with and trust. Your photographer will be with you throughout the day, capturing memories that you’ll always treasure.
When we talk via zoom or a telephone call, I want to have an open discussion about my approach, style, and image quality, but also about how we can work together to ensure that you feel at ease and confident in my abilities. There are countless articles out there on the net with tips on how to choose a wedding photographer and what questions to ask them. Here are some faq’s and my answers people often ask before they hire a wedding photographer.
What is your photography style, can I see examples of your work?
I think most people these days do their research online before getting in touch with a photographer, so I always feel asking about a photographers style is a bit of an weird question, but it is important to see more work especially a full gallery. I always send out a link to a full gallery to potential clients with my first response so they can get a feel for my style and how I shoot a full day.
Viewing a full gallery you can check out the quality and consistency from details, family photos, portraits and of course all the candid natural photos. To me, wedding photography is all about capturing the essence of your day – the love, the laughter, the tears, and everything in between. I want my clients to be able to look back on their photos and remember what it felt like to be surrounded by their family & friends celebrating their wedding day.
I know how meaningful it can be to look back on your parents’ wedding photos and see family members you may have never even met. In this way we photographers are like family historians. Your photos are like a little window into your family’s history, and that’s what I strive to create for my clients – images that will be cherished for generations to come. So when it comes to choosing a wedding photographer, take your time and really think about what kind of legacy you want to leave behind for your family.

Do you have experience shooting weddings, and how many have you photographed?
Choosing a photographer can be overwhelming so it’s important to ask the right questions. While my social media may showcase a beautiful portfolio, it doesn’t give the complete picture of my experience in capturing different types of weddings.
For nearly 20 years, I have had the pleasure of photographing more than 400 weddings of across the UK and Europe. I am always open to new experiences and eager to learn about and capture the beauty of different cultures. Feel free to ask me or whomever you are enquiring with about their experience and approach to ensure that they’re the right fit for your special day.
I believe that reading reviews and testimonials written by real clients is a great way to get a sense of the level of care I put into my work. You can trust that these reviews are honest and will help you set realistic expectations for what you can expect when working with me.
ARE YOU availabile on my wedding day and how long will you stay?
Asking about my availability is a given, but it’s also important to chat about the length of coverage you need for your day. I offer various photography packages that provide different levels of coverage based on the duration of your wedding day. Most couples opt for my full coverage, which covers up to 12 hours and captures everything from bridal prep till the reception and dancing. However, recently many couples are opting for smaller weddings with less hours, so I have less hour options for small weddings and elopements.
Can I see a full wedding gallery?
Whilst you may be drawn to a photographer’s work through their Insta or portfolio it’s important to at least view one full wedding gallery. This will help you better understand how they work, the photos you should kind of expect in your full gallery too from family formals, portraits through to details, and all the documentary moments. It’s easy to make work look good on social media by just seeing someone’s highlights, but viewing a full gallery will give you a sense of the photographers consistency and quality.
What is included in your wedding photography packages and what are the costs?
Planning your wedding is an exciting time, and choosing a photographer is an essential part of your big day. Most photographers offer standard packages with the option to add on extras, while others may have unique collections to suit your individual needs. It’s important to have an open conversation with your photographer about what you want, and they will be more than happy to suggest all of the available options.
Remember, wedding photographers have vast experience and creative ideas to share with you, so don’t be afraid to ask for their input. It’s not just about the number of hours or digital files you receive; it’s about creating a magical experience that you will cherish for a lifetime.
It’s important also to discuss any conditions surrounding copyright and any additional fees, such as travel expenses. At the end of the day, my goal as a wedding photographer is to work with you to create an option that meets all of your needs. That’s why I provide a clear pricing guide with all of the details for you to choose from.
Can I provide a shot list or do you have a standard shot list?
The key to capturing the best photos is trust. When you choose an experienced wedding photographer whose style you love and trust to make it happen, your photographs will be what you want. No shot list is needed as most are generic and filled with standard images every professional wedding photographer will capture.
While some wedding blogs and magazines may insist on a shot list, an experienced pro already knows what’s on it. What’s important is having a conversation with your photographer about what and who means the most to you. If you have important details you’d really love captured I have questionnaire which you can fill in or let me know when we before your wedding.
What about group shots? Yup, I do them of course, again this is something we can chat about and there is a section in my questionnaire for you to complete with your desired groups.
What is your backup plan or what happens if you’re ill?
I understand why you’d want to ask about backup plans. It’s natural to worry about equipment failure, loss, or theft on your special day. That’s why it’s crucial to work with a photographer who not only has high-quality equipment but also a backup plan in case of emergencies.
I always carry two cameras with me at weddings and keep another camera in the car, just in case. I also have plenty of lenses to ensure that your photography won’t be affected if anything happens to one of my cameras. When your event is done I make on and off site back ups of your images too, this is important and also helps me to sleep better knowing I have your photos securely stored.
I have many professional wedding tog friends and I’m also a member of a network of professional photographers. So, for any reason, I’m not able to attend your wedding, I can find a suitable replacement to make sure your wedding is still captured. It’s important to me that you have peace of mind and feel confident in your choice of photographer, no matter what happens.
How long after the wedding will I receive my photos and how will they be delivered?
Waiting for your wedding photos can be an exciting time, so it’s important to manage your expectations and have an idea of how long it might take before you can relive your special day through your photos. It’s worth noting that delivery times can vary greatly between photographers, depending on the level of service they offer, the workload, and how efficiently they run their business. Some photographers can deliver your photos in as little as a few weeks, while others may take up to three months or more. I aim to deliver the full gallery 6-8 weeks after your wedding day, depending on workload. Your photos will delived via a private online gallery.
I hope that these wedding photography questions I have provided you will give you insights into the perspective of your photographer. My aim is to capture your big day in the most incredible way possible and nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing you thrilled with the outcome.
As a Devon Wedding Photographer I understand how important it is for you to have photos that capture the essence of your big day and make you feel truly happy. It’s important to be honest with yourself about your personal preferences and what you truly want from your wedding photography.
Take a moment to browse through different photographers’ sites and pay attention to how their work makes you feel. Look for photographers whose portfolio speaks to you and showcases the things that matter most to you. Whether it’s stunning portraits of you pair, candid shots of your loved ones, it’s crucial that you find a photographer who can deliver on what you’re looking for. Ultimately, it’s all about finding the right fit for you and your vision for your wedding day.
