Devon Wedding Photographer – Editorial Documentary Style

Welcome to Mike Wells Photography! My name is Mike and I’ve been a Devon wedding photographer since 2005. Born and raised in Kent and now living on the beautiful North Devon Coast in Ilfracombe. I love this place and have made it my home having moved here in 2001. As a Devon wedding photographer, my goal is always to capture the uniqueness of each wedding day I’m invited to be part of. No two weddings are the same because no two couples are the same and no two groups of friends and family are the same.

So if you’re looking for a wedding photographer in Devon who doesn’t come with a shot list, believes the real moments of your day is what’s going to make it special, and loves to capture and freeze those moments in the time for you, then you’re in the right place. My style of wedding photography is a blend of documentary and editorial styles. For around 95% of the day I just let your wedding flow and I’ll shoot the happenings. I also love to take natural and creative portraits of you as a couple, so I encourage you to make a little bit of time for that too.

I photographed my first ever wedding in June 2005, and over the years I’ve developed my own photography style. Its taken a long time but now I shoot what I love to and not what I feel I should as a “wedding photographer” Let me explain. Lots of photographers get hung up on the details and things they think they should be shooting and spend way too much time focusing on the things Pintrest and Instagram says we should be photographing instead of looking for the real stuff thats happening.

For example, the dress hanging on a wardrobe upstairs away from you and your bridesmaids. I’d much rather be with you all whilst you are having fun and a glass of bubbly than upstairs photographing the dress. I used to get so pissed off when I heard laughter and I wasn’t there. So now, I leave a lot of these things unless you specifically ask for me to shoot it. People are so much more interesting than things and dresses always look better with someone in them!

You’ll hear a lot of buzz words as you search for your wedding photography. My style sits across two of the styles really, call it editorial documentary, I think it’s the best of both and I blend them into what I consider to be perfect wedding photography. I believe in the magic of reality, so for almost the whole day I will be turning the real moments of your wedding into amazing photos. That’s the documentary bit. But my knowledge of light, colour and composition mean I can sometimes make the photos better if I just give a little direction or if I have an idea. So sometimes I will give a little direction or make a suggestion, especially during couples portraits. That’s the editorial bit.

I’ll also take a few timeless group photos and then I’ll take you away for a short time to take some photos of the two of you together. But never for very long, usually in a couple of short sessions around 10-15 minutes. One day time, one evening time to make the most of the light . So that’s my blend of editorial documentary wedding photography.

Wedding Photography Devon – Experienced and Award Winning

I’ve been photographing weddings since 2005. In that time I’ve photographed more than 450 weddings across the UK and Europe.

I’ve won lots of wedding photography awards during my career, mostly just for individual photos, I don’t tend to enter much anymore, too busy, but I’m proud of those I have won. I’ve twice won Fearless Awards, which are notoriously difficult to win, this is one of the top accolades for a wedding photographer as they are judged by fellow photographers. The best award though, is all the reviews and recommendations I’ve received from past clients, their friends and families.

My Approach as a Devon Wedding Photographer

As much as I would come to your wedding as your Devon wedding photographer (obviously) I like to think of myself as a friend with a camera. This is important to me because I want to capture the essence of your wedding, who you are as individuals and who you are as a couple. If you guys are relaxed around me this energy will flow throughout the group. I often get asked how long I’ve known the couple or who’s friend I am, bride or groom.

I also want to capture your friends and family in a way that you feel like someone who cared about them as much as you do took the photos. The moments that happen on that day will become part of your family history. The photos I take will give you those moments to revisit whenever you want to go back to your wedding day.

Capturing moments this way is a skill I’ve worked hard on for nearly 20 years, making sure that every photo I deliver to you will be worthy of being framed on your wall. So what do you reckon? Can I be your wedding photographer?

Devon wedding photographer : FAQ’s

What are the best wedding venues in Devon for photography?

I’ve listed some venues below for you, with links. The best thing about Devon, especially up on the North Coast where I live is that we have so many brilliant venues here, from coastal places like Tunnels Beaches and Watermouth Cove to the countryside rustic charms of The Ash Barton Estate, Hayne Devon and Beaconside House. There are so many brilliant places to choose from.

How do you handle Devon’s unpredictable weather?

Devon weather isn’t that bad, Ilfracombe is statistically the warmest place in Britain, or so my Dad tells me. And actually the rain makes the grass shine and then you get all the cool reflections and everything glistens. Over the past 20 or so years I’ve had lots of wet weddings and you just have to roll with it and make the best of the situation. I’m all for still going out if its not too bad, why waste the opportunity for some cool rainy or stormy photos when its just a bit wet?
